1944 - 1970

 

1944
Born in Berne.

1961-1964
Studies under Berne Photographer Kurt Blum.

1964
His first independent work, Die Alp (1963), is awarded the Eidgenössische Stipendium für angewandte Kunst (Federal Grant fot Applied Arts). 1964 travels to England. 1965-1968
Beginning 1965 has his own studio and works as a freelance photographer.
Becomes chronicler of the Kunsthalle Bern where he maintains close contact with artists and curators. With Harald Szeemann, he travels to and documents other centers of art including the Venice Biennale among others.

1967
Travels to Italy, France and Spain.

1968
begins collaboration with Berne architects Atelier 5 whose work he photographs over several years. Designs shop window for the department store Loeb in Berne.

1969
Together with Harald Szeemann develops the poster for the legendary exhibition „When Attitudes Become Form“ at the Kunsthalle Bern. Furtrher exhibition posters result, for Panamareko, Markus Raetz and the Kunstalle Bern amoung others. Co-productions with Markus Raetz.

Films
Together with filmmaker Georg Radanowicz „Dreizehn Berner Museen“.
The film „Schweizer Künstler in 21 Minuten“ is produced on the occasion of the exhibition „22 Schweizer Künstler“ („22 CH `69) at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The film consists of 21 one-minute self-portraits of artists invited to show at the exhibition. Idea: Balthasar Burkhard, Herbert Distel. Realization: Peter von Gunten.
